Why Text in All Caps is Hard for Users to Read (FWD)

by anthony on 09/04/10 at 4:14 pm

Do you remember the story where a woman got fired from her job for using all caps in an email? There’s something about text in all caps that turns people off. Using it in a social context means you’re yelling. But using it in a design context means your website has bad readability. People sometimes use text in all caps to emphasize their message. However, what they are actually doing is de-emphasizing their message. This is because text in all caps reduces the shape contrast for each word.

The shape of any word put in all caps for any font, either sans-serif or serif, is a rectangle. This means that text in all caps only show one parallel edge at the top and bottom of each word, giving them low shape contrast. However, text put in title style capitalization show multiple adjacent edges at the top and bottom, giving them high shape contrast. The more nonparallel edges your text has, the higher the shape contrast it has. High shape contrast makes each word easy for users to recognize. If you want your to make your text easier to read, consider using title style capitalization instead of all caps.

When is it okay to use all caps? All caps are fine in contexts that don’t involve reading, such as logos and acronyms. But when your message involves reading, don’t force users to read it with bad shape contrast. The caps lock key is a key that designer’s should rarely use. In emails, using all caps is a sign of bad manners. In design, using all caps is a sign of bad readability.

LaTeX Fonts: 9 Fonts You Don’t Know (and How To Use Them)

by Alessandro

Has the Computer Modern Font already bored you? While I find it extremely clean and elegant, I don’t want people to recognize my typesetting system by the font — especially my Curriculum Vitæ. Indeed, it’s very easy to associate a document to LaTeX when it’s typeset in Computer Modern, headings are not customized, and the style is elegant yet totally predictable (i.e. the “I’ve already seen that elsewhere” syndrome).Hereby you will find a list and the necessary commands to typeset your document with different, and hopefully more refreshing fonts.

LaTeX vs. Word vs. Writer

by Eyolf Østrem

I’ve earlier performed a little test, comparing two files: one produced with MS Word, the other with OpenOffice.org Writer. The purpose then was to demonstrate that Word isn’t necessarily such a bad piece of software — it’s just not always used in a way which is likely to give nice results: most people don’t change the default settings of Times New Roman/Arial and ragged right margin, and they apply formatting manually for each new element, which is bound to lead to inconsistencies.

Now it’s time for the next round of tests, this time including another application in the comparison: the “typesetting environment” LaTeX. I will also go more in detail with the points of comparison, not just considering the crude parameters such as font size and page margins, but also taking into account the finer typographical details. In the former test, I had deliberately turned off hyphenation. That led to a discussion about various hyphenation algorithms, and this time, I have decided to turn on automatic hyphenation in all three programs, using the default settings.

How to set the default program to open a certain type of file in Mac OS X

You can easily set the default program to open certain file types from any “Get Info” window, from any file in Mac OS X.

It can get annoying when you double click on a jpeg from your desktop and it tries to open in Photoshop. Not only is it annoying, it can be a time waster as you close the default application and drag the file to an application on the dock.

If you want to set a default application for a certain file type to open in, control click (right click) on any file and choose “Get Info.”

Right click on any file and select 'Get Info'

In the “Get Info” options, you can easily select which application you would like to be the default for opening your file.

Select your preferred default application

After selecting the default app for the single file, apply it to all files of the same type by clicking on the “Change All” button in that same Get Info window.

Choose to apply to all files of this type
